Select text > Right Click > There's no 'Copy' option

Post by sanitysama » Thu Sep 18, 2008 8:11 am

Why can't I highlight text and right click it to copy it? The correct menu only comes up in word formatting fields, but never when I highlight text and try to copy it via context menu. It only works on some websites, like this one. I noticed I can select and copy via context menu just about anything on the page. The webpages I frequent do not allow me to do so for some reason. It just seems like a code bug.

Can you give a website where this problem appears?

I noticed this problem in Avant. If you use the highlight from the context menu and not the floating toolbar, it highlights nearly every instance of those words on the page. Intentional or a bug?

And as far as the context in Orca, that extended context menu should show something like 'add to dictionary' before hiding things like 'highlight text'.

Well with further experimenting, it seems to happen quite randomly. Sometimes it will only work on some pages, then another it day it won't. Now it seems to be working on this reply page because I went and highlighted some text inside this text reply box and right clicked, then went around the page highlighting and right clicking stuff. So I think if you can find webpages with a word formatting field you can trick the menu into popping up.

How to replicate the issue: Go to Google's front page, select some text on the page, right click, and you'll get the right click menu with hundreds of options on it, but Copy will be one of the options, way at the bottom. Type something into the search field and right click on it, and it will give you a normal text formatting right click dialog with Copy Paste Cut Undo etc, then go anywhere else on the page and do the same again, highlight something and right click it, it'll give you the copy option.

While I'm fully confident I can get the copy option to show on any page if I trick it enough, I don't think it's something I want to keep doing, a browser should always give you the copy option when text is highlighted.

I'm having this exact problem. In that long menu that I have to scroll down to reach "copy", there are irrelevant options such as "save image as", "show image", "copy link location" etc, when I've only highlighted a text.

The issue isn't having irrelevant options on the bar paul. The issue is not seeing the copy option there at all. But in my opinion they aren't irrelevant in that scenario.

statm1,

You can't see the copy option because you have to scroll down to reach it. But if the other options which are irrelevant were not there, then I won't have to scroll down to see copy.

How is it relevant that I choose plain text that has no links or images, then a right click gets me

Show image
open link in new window
bookmark this link
save link
send link
copy email address
copy link location
view image
copy image location
copy image locatio
send image
save image as
save as disktop

??????

I too am getting the same problem. Sometimes the copy option does not pop up. This is the only thing holding me back from this great browser. Please get this fixed!

Koolaidman, is your problem that copy isn't there at all or you just dont want to scroll down the list?

The context menu is annoying.

Right click on a link, close context menu then select some plain text on the same tab.
Right click on selected text.
This is what you get

You can even get this

And as paul123 said the are many irrelevant and unnecessary options when you get the right context menu for plaint text. Image and link related ones for example that don't event work because you selected plaint text, not an image and not a link.

I found that all you have to do is use Ctrl C, works every time!

I'm also experiencing the issue with the right click context menu having options that aren't related to what I've selected.
