Petition to Anderson to bring Groups back

Post by scubamaster » Tue Aug 22, 2006 3:50 pm

I know, we pestered Anderson to bring the IE Favorites back, which he graciously did but if he would also bring back the Groups functionality, Avant 11 would be a hit.

I know a lot of people don't use (or don't understand) the Groups but for those who do it is one of the features that sets Avant apart from the rest.
I understand that there are workarounds in Avant 11 but the Groups implementation in V10 is so simple and elegant.

Anderson pleeease bring it back!

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz; 4GB RAM; Nvidia GeForce 8600GT w. 280.26 driver
Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit SP1 (all patches)
Avant: V2011 b30 - (IE Favorites - No On-Line Storage)
IE V9.0.8112.16421-Upd 9.0.2; Java: 1.7.0.147; Flash: V10.3.183.5
Windows Security Essentials V2.1.1116.0

question:

why dont you simply add a folder named "groups" to your bookmarks, then create a subfolder called "whatever" in it and put your links into it, which are supposed to be in this group...?

if you want to open this group go to your bookmarks, click the folder and choose "open all links in folder"

this should do the same as the groups or am i wrong?

As I said in my post, there are workarounds and you mentioned one of them but the simplicity and the organizing tools for Groups as they were in V10 are gone right now.

Also, that solution doesn't solve the one click ability. It especially doesn't help if your links bar is already full.

For me personally, I always thought it was nice being able to point other users in my office to a one-click group and be able to tell them that everything they need is right there and all they have to do is click it. For those that don't even have a computer at home, that was much easier than them having to remember to right-click considering how infrequently they use our office computers anyway.

I for one would very much like the function back. It was something I used a lot.

The Groups under Bookmarks in 11.0 FP is OK. It only needs 2 clicks to open a set of webpages in a group, as did 10.

I'd rather have it back on the Toolbar where it was.

As I said elsewhere, why we can't have Bookmarks/Bookmarks bar and Favorites/Links bar at the same time? It would solve also this problem, Bookmarks could be used as Groups and there would be even more possibilities as in prev. version.

Hello!

I also always liked the groups feature, and I miss it very much. It's to complicated to search my bookmarks everytime to find groups and so on. I would like to have the menu button "Groups->Groupname" back very much, even if groupname is futurely a folder in bookmarks. It made everything much faster.

Thank you!

Out of curiosity, do you think I'm hallucinating this?

What happens in your 10.2 (or any below) when you uncheck the option in Tools -> Avant Browser Options -> Miscellaneous -> Enable opening of individual group items? (That last option may have the wording incorrect as I'm doing it from memory.)

No.
You just need to put your mouse cursor on the folder and it'll be as a menu item.

Ah... now I see what you both are talking about... doesn't say much for any of our troubleshooting ability, though, does it?

You have to have that option checked in Tools -> Avant Browser Options -> Miscellaneous though, right?

Good work around, although now you're waiting on the menu to expand, which isn't that big of a deal. Still not going to enable it just for one base folder.

If you don't have the 'Expand Groups' option set you can just click on the Groupname and that will open all the entries in the group. I prefer to see what's in the group before I click it so I have this option on.
