orca browser extensions

Post by razor512 » Sat May 27, 2006 6:35 pm

orca browser runs a lot like Firefox so I was wondering if there's a way for me to get my Firefox extensions to run on orca browser?

picture http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/7594 ... ed19zj.jpg

it has the expensing window and the get more extensions button, takes you to the movilla website for them.

i tried my best to get orca to display a version number other than 0.0.0.0.0

but no matter how much i altered it, it keeps saying orca browser version 0.0.0.0.0 and that keeps the extenshions from installing.

what exactly should i change to force a different version number]

How did you get the extensions to work. AFAIK, you are the first one to get extensions working on Orca.

i took the js3250.dll and firefox.exe from the mozilla folder. then used it to install plugins

but it doesnt work too well with other features

the only problem i notice with it is that it messes up the middle click function.

if you middle click on a link. it opens 2 tabs for that 1 link instead of just opening 1 tab.

i will work on a better way around this

ill get my friend to help me debug the orca.exe

(he usally does it for games so he can run them with out a cd )

once we get done with it. ill host the orca.exe on my website

the firefox.exe causes middle click on links problems but the origional orca.exe doesnt. so in theory if the origional exe file can be moded to allow the extensions then it should work and i wont have the tab problem where it opens 2 copies of the link in 2 tabs when i middle click on the link

(the js3250.dll and firefox.exe files are just temporary to check if extensions can be used)

Shows that more people who use FF might like Orca better once Anderson issues a full release version.

@ razor512: Info for your site: There is only one developer for Avant/Orca & he is currently working on Avant 11.x (also known as Avant 2006) that is why a lot of the bugs have not been addressed in 10.xx blds.
Anderson is also planning on making a dual browser which will be both Gecko & IE in one. It could even be Avant 2006.

For anyone reading this he can continue to call it Avant 2006 until Dec.31/06 @ 11:59:59 :lol:

Oh yes thank-you for finding a work around, all help is appreciated by us who like you are end users.

Could you explain what you mean by this? Did you just copy both files to the Orca directory?

yep and it kinda made it look like firefox but it also allow the extenshions to see it as lie a version 1.5 instead of a version 000

i would have stuck with it that wat because for some reason, it never crashed like how firefox does sometimes but i couldnt fix the tab problem when i did that it would always open 2 tabs instead of 1 when i try to open something in a new tab

i hope when theres a official release of the browser that they fix the version problem so i can use orca instead of firefox and still enjoy my adblock plugis (that actually works unlike the built in ad blocker) and not suffer from random crashes like forefox

I tried that, but it didn't work for me. Were you running the Firefox.exe within the Orca directory? I'm a bit confused still about what exactly you did.

yep i was also using the firefox exe.

but it is buggy with orca. because when ever something opens in a new tab, 2 tabs are opened instead of 1

but it doesnt crash life firefox and doesnt lag when refreshing like 70 tabs at 1 time like firefox.

This is very interesting!

As a web developer I rely heavily on FF because of the testing tools and native compliancy to w3 web standards. But... Firefox gets so heavy and has a notorious memory leak.
See: http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/03/26 ... mory-leak/
and, http://www.tweakfactor.com/articles/twe ... eak/4.html

to begin learning about this issue. I've been to help much of the leaks, yet the browser will HANG much too long.

/// aside ///

I haven't seen Ocra hang yet. But, I don't have 60 something plugins installed into it like I do with FF!

Ocra is fast and much faster and lighter than Opera, yet without the availableity of developer tools, I can't justify having FF, Ocra, IE, Avant and Opera open just to do local testing.

The other thing I noticed, As I ramble on, is Avant and Ocra use a smaller memory footprint than IE and FF which is nice.

I'll save the rest of my thoughts for another thread. It would be cool to have Ocra accept some FF extensions.

Ok guys I'd like you all to try this. I havent got this working 100% because I need to find the right versions of extensions or something.

Download your firefox extension .xpi file but Save Target As... to somewhere.
Rename to .zip
Extract
Open the file "Install.rdf" with WordPad/Notepad
Look for the "targetApplication" tag, sometimes this has "netscape" or "firefox" somewhere around it, find the firefox one. Example below

Code: Select all

<em:targetApplication>
      <Description>
        <em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id>
        <em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion>
        <em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>
      </Description>
    </em:targetApplication>
Change the <em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion> tag to <em:minVersion>0</em:minVersion>

Now it installs without complaining about version "Firefox version 0.0.0.0".

Ive tried this with greasmonkey and downthemall (latest versions) but I need to tinker more to find out how to access them. I think I need to find older versions (maybe not).
PS im using the OrcaPatch 1.1.0
