Can you bring back search option when typing on address bar?

Post by kottis » Tue Jul 06, 2010 2:45 pm

ok. until v.46 of avant it was possible when typing something on the address bar apart from suggestions for previously visited similar sites this one option to emerge:

when you typed an address the first line that was emerging as suggestion was "search for (the typed word) with yahoo search" or whatever search engine was your defined.

now since b1-b8 versions when you type a word with no history of visit(or similar letters to history data) for this one you just have to cancel search or give a full url.

well it was convinient for me to use this search option from address bar suggestion instead of typing from the particular search field on the right of avant.

can you repair this little option?

I've put your request down for future inclusion.

Please provide the following information before reporting problems:
Avant Version; System(also point out it is a 32 or 64-bit OS);IE; Memory Size; CPU Speed;
Optional: Firewall; Graphics Card

For the problems hard to replay, could you add me into your MSN or Skype list if you use either of them? The advantage is that you can let us know the situation in the first place by making some screenshots, sharing your screen or explaining the specific problems more clearly when they happen.

This option is back in upcoming 2010 build 9.

The option is almost back but not quite. Try typing Rubbish in the address box and it fails - try typing Rubbish Collection and it works. Seems that one word is not enough. I tried a space before and a then tried a space after but that didn't do it.

Still with Build 107, typing one word in the address bar does generate a successful search but typing more than one word does.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to test and let me know what you find?

This get more strange; this morning I typed the single word "idiot" into the address bar and Avant correctly passed this to my Standard Search engine, Yippy.com. I then typed the single word "idiotic" into the address bar and Avant failed to open the search engine.

This behaviour is the same whether Avant is freshly opened or has been running for some time. I also changed my search engine to Google and got the same results: iodiot is searched for but idiotic is not. This strongly suggests that it is Avant Browser behaving strangely rather than the search engines.

I cannot confirm with v2010.107 on XP - all manner of searches from both the address and search bars work fine. Can you try to reset IE please: Close all browsers then go to Control Panel >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Reset

kudos, thanks for the suggestion. I did as you said and reset IE. I tested the Address Bar search immediately after and it was still the same. I then opened IE and went through the initial setup questions (because it had been reset) and tried again in Avant after a reboot as well.

The result is the same. Since you do not get it on XP, it seems to be an Avant/Windows 7 thing. For completeness, the string in my Standard Search - Web box is

http://search.yippy.com/search?input-fo ... sty&query=

although as I said, I get the same inconsistent result when I changed that to use Google search. When the search fails, as with entering "idiotic", I get a service from Virginmedia at this address:

http://advancedsearch.virginmedia.com/a ... rl=idiotic

This service operates if an entry in the address bar cannot be found and instead of a bland "can't find it", Virgin Media gives its own results of a search for the term. This cannot be contributing to the problem; why does Avant pass one word to the specified search engine but not another? And why does it fail only with a single word but never multiple words (as far as I can tell so far). For example, the word "idiotic" fails, but entering the term "idiotic a" does pass that search term to my chosen search engine.

Here is another example for someone to test with Build 107 on Windows Home Premium 7: a search for the word "weird" in the address bar goes to the chosen search engine as it should. The word "weirder" does not, it is "not found". Adding another word to weirder and entering for example "weirder behaviour" does work as it should.

I should be most grateful if someone with the same setup as mine could try these exact searches from the address bar and let us know the result.

Oooh er, this is probably not Avant's fault at all (good thing, it has enough of its own). I just closed all browsers, opened IE8 and tried these test words directly into the address bar of IE8. idiot and weird caused the default search engine to open with the words in place, whereas idiotic and weirder were not found.

SInce Avant sort of sits on IE, this strange behaviour in IE is showing through.

Thanks for the offer to check my computer but I don't want to take up time on the Avant forum for what I am sure now is an Internet Explorer issue. My son has only ever used IE and never even installed Avant (I have tried) and he gets the same results as me. In fact he can add banana to the list of words that work and go to the search engine from the address bar and he can add bananas as a word that does not.

I got a friend to check, who uses Firefox (but is otherwise a nice chap) and he finds that

In Firefox 3.6.8
idiot and banana go to wikipedia
weird goes to google
idiotic goes to google
bananas goes to wikipedia
weirder goes to dictionary.com

In IE8
idiot, banana + weird all go to google
idiotic, bananas + weirder also go to google

This was an accidental curiosity found when I wondered if I might save some space by using the address box instead of the search bar. I'll live with it.
