Avant Browser 10.0 Beta 6

Post by Anderson » Sun Sep 05, 2004 3:33 am

Hello, Everybody:

I just finished beta 6:
http://dl.filekicker.com/send/file/1422 ... abbeta.exe

In this version I add/improved:

1. Improved Popup Blocker for SP2.
2. Show URL as tooltips for blocked Popups.
3. Show URL as tooltips for blocked ADs.
4. Added Drop-Shadow for floating bar.
5. Added options to disable floating bar (Options->Misc.)
6. Other internal improvements.

I am too busy, and didn't read all posts about beta 5. But I will read them now, and try to add as many request as I can.

Thanks for testing the beta version.

Sincerely yours,

Anderson

One suggestion. Clean up the Miscellaneous option area.

A few things could be moved to other areas/areas could be created for them.

Hi Anderson,

I installed the new version half an hour ago and - It works fine! Good job.

I think it's much faster than the beta 5.

One request or bug:

A nice feature would be the possibility to rename URL's in the group-folder.

BTW: I've an other question:

What are the possibilities or use of the feed-folder.
At the moment it makes no sense for me??
In german feed means: Give someone something to eat, but I'm quite sure,
that this is not the real meaning of the feed folder.
In preview to the translation of the new features to german, could someone give
me some explanations about and the use of this new tool?
Maybe here or as PM/email.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

HarryP - "Feed" refers to a RSS "Feed".

To anyone: Where is the option to disable the float bars? I can't seem to find the options :?

A "feed" is a series of items being forwarded automatically somewhere, thence the term: as you can feed birds, for example, giving them a reservoir of seeds and keeping it constantly full, so you feed news to a client application (newsreader) when such an application is given a constant flow of news items, at specified intervals, without user intervention ("newsfeed"). It may be very useful, for example, to monitor a news source (say CNN, Reuters, etc.) for breaking news, stock information, etc., without having to constantly browse to their site.

Hope this helps... (thinking of Wile E. Coyote and "free bird seed" :D :D )

Looks real good Anderson.......really miss having a choice of skins though. Also, I have renamed avant.exe to iexplore.exe to be able to use the new IE popup blocker, although I have turned it off to be able to see how much improved the Avant blocker is.

Thanks.

This beta seems really fast, Anderson! :)

One thing:

The floating image toolbar now seems to pop-up in very random places when pointing the cursor on an image. Where as before it would always pop-up next to the cursor, it now sometimes do that aswell, but more often a bit away from the cursor, or even outside of the image.

But there is maybe some important thought behind this behaviour?

Btw, thinking about it - does this new behaviour have something to do with the toolbar not showing up on small images, such as the smilies on this forum? (Which is great that it doesn't do anymore.)

Thanks!

Yay, tooltips are back! (Or most of them anyway.) I was missing those badly. And no floating bar for little buttons, great.

Oddly though the bar doesn't appear for some larger images - try the avatars here.

Anderson is there a technical reason or politcal reason for you going back to avant.exe instead of iexplore.exe?

just curious.

Scrolling the following page is a bit jerky when grabbing the scrollbar and moving up and down. The scrolling is a lot smoother when scrolled in Firefox. I'm guessing it's got something to do with the Bin Laden Money counter. Any chance of making the scrolling smoother, or is it just a result of using the IE core ?

(When you say bin laden, do you mean loaded with garbage cans?)

Oh.. come on.. that was just bad.

I'm not having any problem scrolling that page. I get a smooth scroll either way.

It would appear the jerky scrolling was down to my system being a bit overloaded cos it's scrolling smoothly today.

Yes, I noticed that too. Also this still occurs,
bigC wrote:The little toolbar on images is neat. However it shows up even if the image is behind the browsers toolbars up top. So if I go to click on a menu and theres an image behind it, that bar appears.
Except now the bar appears down on the page somewhere so its not obstructing my view of AB's toolbar & menus like before.

I also like that it comes up less frequently on small images that I don't want it to show for. There is a definite improvement there.

Great work Anderson :)

Nope it wasn't my imagination, the slightly jerky scrolling is back. It's possible it has something to do with how many tab windows are active (each tab should be loaded with a different page). I had approx 10 and was experiencing the jerky scrolling, then I shut most of them and the jerky scrolling went away, then it re-appeared after I started browsing again and it went back to approx 10 tabs.

Update: It's not just related to scrolling because while writing this post the cursor would stop briefly every half-a-second or so while the holding the left/right cursor key down, instead of scrolling smoothly. The problem is also noticeable if you enter several lines and then hold the backspace key down.

This is very annoying.
