Dr. Orca 1.0 Alpha

Post by Anderson » Mon Sep 12, 2005 7:15 am

Hey everybody, after 9 monthes' development, I finished a New Browser.

It's still alpha version, which means it's not very stable. But it's very safe, will not modify your system.

Some features like auto-compelte will be available in the official release.

It looks like Avant and, at one point opened a new window in Avant, rather than as itself.

What is new about this browser?

Ooh, Anderson, what a surpise! :shock:

I didn't know any thing about that you're working on a totally new browser! I should try it!

I'm now using it! Seems excellent.

With Avant Browser, I use a "Proxy Auto-Configuration" file and a hosts file to block ads. Now I try to figure out, how Dr. Orca could use this PAC and hosts file as well...

Nice!
Much better than FireFox!

One question,
Will you continue to develop Avant Browser (IE Engine)?

Sorry for being a little nieve but what is the advantage of using a gecko engine browser besides the look and feel? That's what Dr. O is right? It feels like IE or Avant but it based on Mozzilla.

2.View source is not working if I'm viewing some file located in my computer.

Wow, this is great, Anderson. Speed has always been an issue for Mozilla & Firefox on my systems. I'm not having any speed issues with this.

The only thing I've noticed so far that seems like it could be a bug is that I can't open more than 20 tabs at a time using middle-click. After 20 tabs are opened, I have to either hold Shift or drag the link to open it... which is sort of a hassle because I have the middle-clik set to open in the background.

Will also look forward to the context menu options being added to this engine. Except for the minimal things I do with those many windows, this will start to see some regular use by me. (Nice to see the skins work, too ;) )

Looking forward to playing with this one. I like how it uses Window's Favorites instead of Mozilla's Bookmarks. This will make it easier for me when checking my sites and how they render in the different browsers.

Since I'm a web consultant, I have to work with many different versions of browsers, etc.. so I created a simple home page that all my browsers open up with.

Code: Select all

<html>
<body>
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
document.write("<table border='1' align='center'>");
document.write("<tr><td align='right'><b>appName: </b></td><td>" + navigator.appName + "</td></tr>");
document.write("<tr><td align='right'><b>appCodeName: </b></td><td>" + navigator.appCodeName + "</td></tr>");
document.write("<tr><td align='right'><b>appVersion: </b></td><td>" + navigator.appVersion + "</td></tr>");
document.write("<tr><td align='right'><b>userAgent: </b></td><td>" + navigator.userAgent + "</td></tr>");
document.write("</table>");
</script>
<noscript>
<div align="center"><center>Scripting Disabled</center></div>
</noscript>
</body>
</html>
Here's the screenshot of Orca:
Image

Initial bugs I have found:
- Right click on tray icon to Exit Orca receive an error
- On Orca load the address bar says about:blank even though it opens my home page (I think Avant does it too, can't remember)
- Try opening more than one instance of Orca. "Fatal Error: Missing XPCOM components!"

Still prefer Avant myself but this works quite well .... sort of. When closing Dr Orca, I received the following error message;

There's also another noticable issue.... upon opening/closing, it modifies the MenuExt keys (as does Avant) but it doesn't actually use them??

Downloaded the new Dr. Orca browser; after installing everthing worked fine the first time I ran the program, but on the following times I've opened the browser I get "Missing XPCOM Components" message and the browser fails to open. Uninstalled, reinstalled, but still the same message. Any ideas as to what has gone wrong?

Thanks

The Roboform Toolbar shows, but Roborform will not fill in forms, and the search window in the Roboform Toolbar doesn't show up at all.

I'm finding the up and down arrow keys don't work (e.g. to scroll).

I guess these are the bugs you expect with a brand new, alpha release. I am glad we can help make it better by trying it out and reporting here. I look forward to the finished product.

Keep up the great work, Anderson!
