The sky really is falling!

Post by mbrazil » Thu Apr 04, 2013 7:46 pm

Looking at the big picture, Avant is starting to look pretty amateurish overall:

* The Avant website loads very slowly.
* The Avant installer files download very slowly.
* These forums frequently experience unexplained slowdowns that make it difficult to use.
* The Bug Tracker hasn't been maintained for years.
* The online Help (which is all there is) hasn't been updated for years, so it is inaccurate, incomplete, and very outdated.
* The wiki has also become inaccurate, outdated, and incomplete.
* With Jasmine on leave, xiaobing is overloaded.
* Avant 2013 was still in alpha condition when it went to beta.
* Avant 2013 build 22 is still in beta condition at best, if not alpha.
* The overall user interface is inconsistent, illogical, confusing, hard to use, and incomplete in many places.
* The new user interface in Avant 2013 is a hybrid clone of recent and current versions of IE, Firefox, and Chrome (none of which are any good anymore as a result of these new UIs), and it does relatively nothing to enhance Avant, while introducing many new bugs, bringing back many old bugs, and significantly reducing the performance and stability of Avant.

All these things combined are a recipe for disaster.

Can't comment on the rest, but it was myself and a few others that wrote the original help file. I've not had any time for it, due to work and family commitments, but will try and find time to update it.

I've had a look at the server for these forums (don't have access to the main avantbrowser.com server) and am not seeing any issues at present or in the logs, so am unaware as to the cause of any slowdowns at present.

I'll continue monitoring them however.

Thanks, MysteryFCM! Know that my comments are not intended as criticism of anyone's work or efforts -- I'm just very concerned about the state things are in.

About the only time I have slowdowns on the forums is when there are several large pictures in the thread. It makes typing and scrolling on my 2.8 Ghz machine look like I'm on a 200 Mhz machine.

This varies too, although it seems like the slower periods occur more often than they used to. One thing I see quite frequently is very slow response to submitting a post. Several times, I've just composed my posts offline in Word and copied the text to the forum when I was done, so I wouldn't have to deal with the awkwardness of trying to type when the characters don't appear on screen right away.

Next time it occurs, please send me an email (services AT it-mate DOT co DOT uk) and I'll see if I can ID the cause (there's several possible causes that come to mind, as they could be occurring at the same time as the slowdown (e.g. DB backups))

We have speed up the bandwidth of our server the day before yesterday.
A new version may be released in one month which will improve the speed of old skins.

That would be awesome, I can just stick with the old skin that I'm accustomed to and have configured to my liking... :D

I hope that the "new version" that "may be released in one month" will also have all or at least most of the focus problems resolved. For me, the many focus bugs or focus-bug symptoms are the most significant problem in Avant at present. There are many more that are almost as critical, but the focus problems very frequently interfere with whatever I'm trying to do in Avant and in other apps when Avant steals the focus. One focus problem, the focus grabbing during page loading, is fixed in Build 23 such that it now works as most browsers do and only grabs the focus once when you click on an external link in email, etc. I wish there were some way to avoid even that -- I'd like to be able to click a link in an email or an external document and have it start loading in Avant without Avant ever taking the focus unless there's something wrong with the link and it can't be loaded.

I'll test this problem carefully once the new version is available and will remind Anderson of this problem too.

We'll consider it.

In the last couple of weeks there have been multiple times that I had to exit AB because one of AB's pop-up windows opened up behind AB. There's no way to bring these pop-up windows to the front, so I have to exit AB and then reload the pages...
