Avant 2012

Post by mathman » Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:19 am

I see that a lot of effort is going into the development of Avant 2013. Does this mean that Avant 2012 (stable release) is frozen? I am asking this because there are several small quirks (that I've raised in the past) that have not been rectified. I wonder whether they will ever be adressed for 2012 or only for 2013 (if ever)?

I can't answer your question, but I can tell you that, aside from the new user interface, the use of which is optional (you can select and use the same skin you're using in Avant 2012), Avant 2013 is Avant 2012 with some new features (many in response to requests) and a lot of bug fixes that were not resolved in Avant 2012. Also, at least for me, Avant 2013 is more stable than any build of 2012 was. There are some bugs, but they're not show stoppers, and overall Avant 2013 beta 5 is in much better shape than Avant 2012 build 197.

Have a look at the Avant Browser Requests forum and the Avant Beta Bug Report and Avant Beta Resolved Issues forums within the Avant Browser Development forum. You'll see that a lot of the requests and bug reports for Avant 2012 have been dealt with in the current beta of Avant 2013.

I suggest that you back up your profile and then upgrade to Avant 2013 beta 5. If for some reason you're not happy with Avant 2013, you can simply reinstall Avant 2012 build 197. Chances are, you won't even have to restore your profile from your backup.

2013 is the improved version of 2012. The bugs in 2012 will be fixed in 2013 too.
What are the small quirks? I will record them again.

I tried 2013 and immediately went back to 2012. There are at least two serious shortcomings (for me) in 2013. The tool bar at the top (File View Bookmarks etc.) wasn't there. It looks like there are icons for some of these items, but I didn't feel like going on a hunting expedition. The other was an icon (lower left corner) to open side bar - it wasn't there in 2013. Possibly there are ways to resolve these issues, but until I can comfortably work in 2013, I will use 2012.

Some unresolved issues in 2012 (I will go through the forum to find the rest): (1) Video capture didn't work - when I want to capture a streaming video I use Firefox (not Firefox rendering) which uses Realplayer. (2) I use IE9 rendering most of the time - it does not have automatic spellcheck, like Firefox or Chrome rendering. Also the IE9 spellcheck is a little flakey. (3) For some web sites I need to use (automatically) Firefox or IE compatible rendering.

Since those seem to be UI issues, try clicking the Avant logo in the upper left corner and then View -> Skins and anything below the dotted line. That moves you back to the default 2012 interface.

It worked. One minor problem. I could not access this forum until after I made the change.

Just for general information, what is skins about and what do the various choices mean. I used "Windows Traditional".

The "Download Video" Option still doesn't work under 2013.

The skins used to be a bit more of what you'd expect... they'd change the look of the menus, icons, etc., and a new Skins Maker was released with each new release so that people could create their own custom skins. That stopped with the release of 2012, if not a major release before it, and while older skins might still work (minus any new buttons added to the UI), the built-in skins became our only options. Those built in skins keep the icons the same, but change the menu & toolbar backgrounds and the color & style of the focus highlights.

In 2013, there's a new "base" skin with new icons for the 2013 UI, but choosing one of the old "skins" takes you back to the 2012 interface

Are the skins described anywhere that I can look at?

I have seen the list. What I would like to see is something that describes them.

Aero Glass, Aluminum, etc. are just meaningless terms to me.

The skins don't change anything permanently. Just switch to the skin to see the difference

I'm not sure what to look for, although I confined myself to the lower half of the list. The only thing I noticed was some color changes in the background for different parts of the page, mostly the tab bar.

Avant 2013 b6

Post by Tinman57 » Fri Feb 08, 2013 11:14 pm

I just installed 2013 build 6 from 2012 b197. So far from what I can tell, 2013 is MUCH MUCH snappier. Clicking on a link opens a new tab instantly and it don't take as long for all the contents of the page to load. That alone makes me extremely happy. :o Another thing I noticed, and am extremely happy about is the focus problem when no tabs are open. Before, if I didn't at least have one tab open, I couldn't go beyond the first level in any menu. It caused the newly opened menus to pop up in the back. Thank god that's fixed!!! =D>

Only thing I didn't care for is the new skins, especially the "sticky" varieties. I don't like the looks and especially didn't like that my tabs were locked on top. I prefer my tabs on the bottom, it's easier to distinguish the tabs from all of the other toolbars and buttons. I took it back to the 2012 Windows Traditional, and so far I don't see any problems, everything is situated right where I want it. I also see that with 2013, the Roboform toolbar pops up instantly as soon as I click on the icon. With the 2012 versions I had to click the icon and then RMC on the screen and choose "Fill Forms" in order to get the toolbar up. So yet another thing to be happy about :!: :D

Tinman, you can have the speed of AB 2013 and the tab bar on the bottom if you use one of the skins other the those in the Stickers & Opal families (also known as the new GUI skins). Using one old GUI skins (such as Aero Glass) will allow you to manipulate your AB 2013 layout so that it appears to be just as it was in AB 2012.

Uhhhmmmm, yes, that's what I did!
