IE rendering engine

There are two versions of IE rendering, IE9 and IE compatible. What's the difference?

The only thing I've noticed is that IE9 has a bug when using ieSpell, while IE compatible does not.

To use an old expression, the description is "inside baseball". As a user how would I see the difference, other than the ieSpell problem?
