Avant 2010 (11.8) with IE9 Test

I just installed Avant 11.8.122 over IE9 Beta and here are the results:

- Installation: o.k.
- Basic browsing: o.k.
- Flash: o.k.
- Java: o.k.
- HTML5: 27 out of 300 (really bad, test sites from IE9 site are not working)
- Javascript: not working (tried Sunspider Test but would not even start)

The result make sense t me since Javascript and HTML5 were the areas that IE9 was mostly improved on. So as I expected, Avant is not working with IE9 right now but I hope it will soon.

Did you use Avant with IE9 to post that? Your useragent is reporting you as using IE7. Try changing Tools > Rendering Mode to IE8 Standards and see if there's any changes...

Yes, I posted during the test from my Windows 7, IE9, Avant 2010 setup. I tried every rendering and compatibility mode but no luck with javascript or HTML5.

It's a wild guess, but maybe try modifying the following registry keys:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION]
"avant.exe"=dword:00002328
"ybrowser.exe"=dword:00002328

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DOCUMENT_COMPATIBLE_MODE]
"avant.exe"=dword:00002328
"ybrowser.exe"=dword:00002328
2328 hex = 9000 decimal

Although I'm not sure if Avant v2010 resets them on startup..

Hi Kudos,

So, would changing registry make Avant support IE9?

Anyway, here is a testing build of Avant for IE9 test. Could anybody also give it a test, and let me know if you see any problems. So far I can see is file download not working. But we are working on the new download manager.

Thanks,

Anderson

I'm downloading now and I'll report back with what I find out..

Update: This test build helps use the IE9 engine a lot better than it does with the original build 122. The Acid3 test works identically. All the tests I did using the IE9 Test site worked pretty well. I did not have to change the registry to 9000 and I didn't notice any change when I tried 9000. There actually has not been any official information on using 9000 so far though.

Only problem I found was that when resizing the Avant window that it turns black until you release your mouse while your resizing. Also when you open a new tab the zoom says its at 0% (although its zoomed correctly) but if you switch between tabs it changes back to 100%.

One question though.. Why did you include iexplore.exe with the build?

How would any Avant older builds work with IE9? I am still on 11.7 bld 43 until I feel that Avant is stable enough to venture into the new builds again....I've tried a few, but reverted back to 11.7 builds.

I highly doubt anything bad would happen if you installed IE9, no matter what build you had of Avant. But, like I said in the other topic, without the test build that Anderson released, the scenarios that you would use IE9 in are very crippled. So far as CSS3 and HTML5 as well as the hardware accelerated features.

There is a requirement of having Vista SP2 installed in order to install it though.. In case your not on SP2 yet.

As for installing IE9, its actually the less jarring install of IE I have ever seen. Its very smooth, with the exception of having to restart in the end. It uninstalls just fine.

Installed IE9 beta and the avant beta. Mostly works ok, but I bought two MP3s on amazon and they will not download -- was never a problem with prior versions.

Can you explain more clearly? The link? Where work improperly?

When you purchase an MP3 song on Amazon.com, clicking on the purchase confirmation link should open a dialog box to open or save the file. (You're supposed to click open because that causes Amazon's MP3 file dowloader to open.) When I had IE9 and the Avant beta installed, nothing happened when I clicked the purchase confirmation link. There's a box to click if the download doesn't start -- again nothing happened. I tried it with two purchases and gave up (they worked fine in Chrome, so I know it wasn't an Amazon site issue). I neglected to try directly in IE9 before I uninstalled the whole thing and went back to IE8 and AB 122, so I can't say if the problem was IE9 or Avant Browser. Since IE9 takes a while to install and uninstall, I hope someone else can report on whether they have the same issue and where the problems lies.

I had some time on Sunday night to reinstall IE9. I purchased a song on Amazon without installing the Avant ie9beta version. Worked fine. I then installed the Avant ie9beta and tried to purchase another song. No go. Same issue I had before -- the download wouldn't start. I didn't mention this before, but I get the IE information bar asking if I want to download the file. Why do I get the bar? I didn't in my successful download, never have before, and am using the same IE security settings I have always used. Anyway, I indicate I want to download the file, and absolutely nothing happens except that the information bar disappears. I would have thought that suddenly getting the information bar would be tied to IE9 and its settings, not which version of AB I am using.

As Anderson said, the download is not working now in this avant for ie9 test version.

You tried this in ie9 right?

Tried it both in IE9 and in AB with the regular build 122 installed. It works both ways but not with the ie9 test version of AB installed. Obviously if the download manager is not working in the test version this is not going to work. But I also get the same problem (using the test AB) trying to go to Comcast's online voice mail manager.

I noticed with this testing version that the option for choosing the Renderer is missing. Is that intentional?

Well, the test build was only a test to see if there were any problems with switching to IE9. The rendering controls were taken out since they restricted you from changing the rendering to IE9. Once theres a stable version with support for IE9 we will find out if the rendering options are still there or not. There hasn't word on that yet.

Don't you mean that the rendering controls were taken out to restrict you from changing the rendering to anything but IE9 ?

No. The way it was setup, there was no way to change it to IE9. And since it was only a test build to test IE9 it wasn't really meant to be used as just another build of Avant.

You can manually change the engine Avant uses no matter what build you have by changing the value in the registry. Just like we had to before the controls were built into Avant.

Ok. I thought you were talking about the test version, but you were apparently talking about the current "stable" build of Avant Browser. Thanks for the info. ;)
