Keep or Remove RSS Feature?

Post by Jasmine » Wed Jan 20, 2010 3:52 am

Do many users are using the RSS feature in Avant Browser? We're going to remove it from Avant Browser 12. Please let us know whether you hope to keep it or not. Thank you~

Avant Version; System(also point out it is a 32 or 64-bit OS);IE; Memory Size; CPU Speed;
Optional: Firewall; Graphics Card

For the problems hard to replay, could you add me into your MSN or Skype list if you use either of them? The advantage is that you can let us know the situation in the first place by making some screenshots, sharing your screen or explaining the specific problems more clearly when they happen.

Although I use another feed reader, I would rather it stay because I'm sure many people do use it. Is it going to be removed because there are problems with it? or just because you want to? If it's the former, then I would rather the bugs be fixed. If it's the latter, well, that's just a poor reason.

I hope that this does not go the same way as the integrated download manager...

For a smaller package size if few people are using the feature. Also the old RSS interface is not pleasing and the design is not nice. So the first release of Avant 12 would come out without the feature and Anderson hopes to redesign it before adding it back.

I don't think package size makes much of a difference with today's growing transfer speeds.

How much of a size difference are we actually talking?

Also what difference would it make to leave the feature in and still work on a redesign which can be swapped out later?

I'm for whatever makes Avant a better browser, without it being bloated. File size does not add to bloat in my opinion, just things that impact browser performance. I've personally never used RSS feeds but it's obvious some rely on it. However, people should be able to continue using 11.x until Anderson can develop an improved feeder, no?

I guess the question on some people's minds is how long would it take him to make that happen?

And in all honesty I don't want something that is just going to delay the release of 12 any longer than it has been. :\

I don't really use RSS at all, but it seems like it would fit fine as an addon, if the addon system were improved.

If package size is a major reason for getting rid of the current design then I strong disagree. All downloadable browsers to my knowledge are considerably bigger than Avant. Orca is over 5 times bigger than Avant and no one minds.

I do believe a considerable amount of people use the RSS feature so I think there should be some type of RSS interface in Avant 12 even if you have to redesign it to make it look alittle more modern.

well, my point is... why make it built in if it can very easily be achieved with an addon?

Well, if its built-in you dont have to go get it if you want it, its already there. Plus, I am pretty sure it will use less resources if its built in compared to being an IE or Avant plugin or Orca Extension.

Well, imho... The current feed reader isn't all that impressive anyways. It would be pretty easy to do the same thing with Javascript. If Avant 12 uses multiprocessing and an improved addon system, it might actually improve performance.

I agree it might be a bother to have to actually get the addon in order use the feature. So how about including it with Avant Browser, and change the name to plugin? It can work the same way as an addon, but be included from seperate files. That way the files won't even need to be loaded if disabled.

There should be a new plugin interface designed for Avant/Orca Browser, which would allow you to easily add sections to the options and context menus. The plugin interface should be able to load certain plugins for certain sites, save plugin configurations, and also allow the plugin to make certain configuration for different sites. (without the use of cookies)

Just to name a few, you could totally replace RSS, Translate, Mail, Auto Refresh, and Ad Blocker very easily and efficiently (and just flat out better) with Javascript and a new plugin interface. The best part is that if they have their own files, people can modify them and the feature can continue to grow or improve.

IMHO, the reason your advocating javascript is because you can code in javascript.. Its just a matter of the programmers taste. Have very feature as a plugin(componentized) or have all features built into the product.

Also in my opinion, programming languages like C++,C#, etc. can run things faster than javascript can since Avant would need to rely on (IE8/IE7/IE6)'s javascript engine to render these "plugins".. And since a great majority of people are using IE6 or IE7, the speed of the javascript engines in those versions are pretty slow and pathetic compared to IE8 or Orca/FF/Chrome/etc. Avant is plenty fast with all these features built-in so apparently they aren't slowing it down.

I was never saying the current RSS reader was a good design thats why I said to keep it in just redesign it to make it more modern.

It's more like... I'm advocating javascript because I know of the power of it, which just happens to be a result of the fact that I code with it. The javascript engine is more than capable and fast enough to serve as a plugin engine for IE6-8. The plugin interface will serve to speed up certain tasks, like gathering the RSS feed itself. When you must create workarounds because IE6 doesn't support it, or you need to get past some security feature, then that's when javascript performance will ever become an issue.
But imo, the whole beauty of it, will be the fact that it's open source. Which will allow developers continue to evolve it. It opens the door to more variety, which means more people to potentially please.
