Why continue with Avant with IE8?

Post by bradco » Thu Apr 02, 2009 1:24 am

Is there a reason to continue with Avant with IE8 now out? I became an Avant user back with IE6 in 04. Now, after touring IE8, I'm wondering if there is a reason to continue managing 2 browsers anymore?

-The issue of disabling flash is taken care of with new add-on switches
-Highlighting search terms is not an issue anymore- IE8 has it
-I can use buttons directly in IE that Avant won't support or it's a bunch of steps that usually don't work
-No more constant upgrades with IE8

I'm a paying Avant user. But after these years, if I don't have to manage 2 browsers and do the maintenance that Avant seems to need- why do it?

I am looking for reasons to continue with Avant- appreciate replies on this topic. Thank you:

That's more a matter of personal preference. Do whatever you're more comfortable with. Avant version 12 should be a huge improvement though, so definately check that when it's done, if you decide to use IE8 instead.

Personally, I really like the online storage, the tabs at the bottom, the double click to close a tab, and much much more, that I'm so used to. Most of all, even though imho needs to be improved, I love the JS add-ons. I also like the MDI windows instead of TDI/SDI, IE/Maxthon/FF and most other browsers I've seen, use.

There are tons of reasons to use Avant no matter what they put in IE Bradco.. I for one would take Avant over IE for the sheer fact of being able to have tabs on the bottom. Not to mention the skinning ability in Avant.

But if you feel annoyed that Avant is updated so often then I guess you'll have to go with IE. I personally dont "manage" 2 browsers. I don't use IE what so ever. I just take advantage of every new release of IE to make Avant better.

Because of the excellent support forum ;-D

Seriously, it's a personal preference. The look, feel, power and ease of use of Avant does it for me. It's "comfortable".

Along with the tabs at the bottom, I love the next and previous tab buttons and the compact view gives me so much more page real estate.

I'm keeping Avant. As far as I've seen, IE8 has:

-No URL aliases
-No scrolling through tabs with right click + mouse wheel
-No locking of favorite tabs
-No way to move tabs to the bottom of the window
-No mouse gestures
-No online profile storage
-No skins
-No ability to select which tabs reopen after a browser crash (if a webpage that crashes the browser was open, you'll be in a loop unless you can close it before it does so again)
-No quick and easy way to enable and disable ad blocker/popups/sounds/pictures/Flash animations/videos/ActiveX/Scripts/Java applets

Not to mention that Avant crashes far less than plain IE.

I would like Avant to at some point start using IE8's Web Accelerators. Maybe that will happen in version 12. Aside from that, using Avant is a more convenient experience that saves me time.

Well, Ill say it again for anyone that hasn't seen my other posts. Every new version of IE8 that comes out makes Avant better simply because of the updated engine that comes with every release of IE. So, if you want to continue using Avant you can still keep IE8 installed and it will make Avant better!

Axeman, you know a new keyboard isn't expensive at all.. Why do you want to keep a keyboard where the caps lock sticks so frequently? :P

I'm unclear on what you're talking about with the buttons and "a bunch of steps." Are you talking about add-on buttons? How often are you doing that?

As for "constant upgrading," if you don't like upgrading... don't upgrade. I don't really see that as a drawback. A person who likes IE5 could make the same argument about IE8.

But, I was a little confused about "managing 2 browsers." What exactly are you doing that falls under "management?" Since the add-ons button thing seems to be a big deal, I might guess that you download, install, enable, and disable a lot of add-ons? But to me, that seems a lot like owning 2 cars, buying a lot of CDs, and then ditching a car because you're having to drag these CDs from one car to the other. Like I said, I just don't get the "managing" aspect of things.

I'm not criticizing, but I'm usually of the mindset that most of what we want to do can be done with either a different take on things or a slight change in behavior.

I like the fact that I can jump back & forward in a tab by just holding down either the left or right mouse button & clicking the other.
Also I really never use IE any more it's just there because as Horni states it upgrades Avant's engine.
