What's going on ?

Post by phillip_ » Mon Aug 18, 2008 4:03 am

I remember to have installed avant about two or three years ago. Back then I didn't (and still don't) like firefox, was annoyed with IE and Avant was a great option. Now, a couple years later, I still use avant and what changed ? Nothing. And that is exactly the problem: Nothing has changed in this browser, it just does not evolve, it is pretty much the same browser I downloaded years ago, the only differences are features such as something called "robo-whatever-fill" - which I just can't get to be stupid enough to use - and three warnings a week that there is a "new avant browser version available", id est, another god damn build that fix a dot that may be a little bit to the left when it should be half inch to the right, but who the **** actually cares about it ? So, I decided to grab most other famous browser and run a few tests. I've tried Safari, Firefox 2, Firefox 3 and Opera. Well I'm not used to any of those but the differences are huge:
Avant was, FROM FAR AWAY, the slowest amongs them. And I'm not talking about milisecond, I'm talking about a HUGE difference. ****, I didn't even know my dsl could open websites that fast. And no, I'm not full of viruses, and I've formatted and reinstalled Avant dozens of times and didn't feel any change. It is slow, very limited, obsolete, slow, heavy and also has some bugs (which the other browsers might have too, I don't really know them this well). So, yes, analyzing all this, avant was from far not only the slowest, but definitely the WORST browser. Why don't I just switch the browser ? Because I'm used to Avant. I posted a review to download.com strongly discouraging people to download the browser.
Yes, I might be forced to go to other browsers but here's the point of this post: I don't want to. I'm used to this browser. I'd hate to have to export all my favorites, customize everything again, install a couple of plugins in firefox to make it better and so forth. So, what the **** is going on ? Is the browser going to be changed, improved ? And I'm talking about improvements, not these funny builds that are release every week. If so, when ? I'm not willing to switch my browser but if "this is it" with Avant, there's no other option. If anybody wants to know, I'm currently using the latest avant version (If I'm not mistaken this would be 11.6 build 20 (which doesn't really mean anything since it is all the very same old crap) and IE6.

I've switched to Orca on most of my computer's simply because of speed. It's basically a FF-rendered version of Avant that Anderson has been working on, (which I suspect is why we haven't seen any major improvements to Avant everyone has been hoping for). And yes it is slow now. Old Avant back in the 10 versions used to be lightning quick, the newest 11.6 I believe has some bad memory leak issue (but they either can't figure it out or aren't going to). Remember Avant only has 1 true developer? Ya, so that's also why. I'd say Maxthon is gaining ground on Avant as well, and if it keeps going like it is, I'm probably making the switch at some point, though just as reluctant as you are.

I don't know.. Avant is just as speedy as it ever was here, which is pretty much equally as fast as my other browsers. And it rarely if ever locks up or freezes. I don't understand how Avant can behave so drastically differently for some people.

Trust me: it makes two of us. The difference is that everybody who I know have been having these issues. Really, you can't be serious about the "pretty much equally as fast as other browsers". Wherever I test it, the difference is just too huge to not be noticed. Sorry, but I simply don't believe in what you said.

I really, really like Avant. Love the autofill. But recently it's started acting funky, just quitting for no reason, hanging for long minutes, and not rendering pages correctly. And it's slow. I didn't really know it because I used Avant all the time. I loaded up IE for the first time in months, and DAMN! Pages were literally jumping onto my screen! Mozilla, BAM! The page is right there. I couldn't believe it. My beloved Avant...what happened? Like the OP, I'd hate to have to switch, but geez, there is a palpable difference. Tell me I don't need to move to IE, just say it aint so!

+1
Avant is terribly slow, hangs randomly & uses a ton of memory. Really, what happened? Also, the development has crawled to a hold. And even the new feautures in 11.7 A3 is buggy and not a functional as FF3.

Well, There are some known issues with few latest versions of Avant and I'm sure that Anderson know about them, But I don't think that it's very easy to fix.
When I've compared the latest versions of many web browsers, I've found that they work quite similarly in term of speed. (Of course, Some rendering engines handle certain scripts faster, But it's only noticeable on a very few amount of webpages)
I couldn't confirm most speed and performance relaed issues on any of my machines, But that definitely doesn't mean that there's no problem. It's just very hard for Anderson to find the problem and fix it....

It seems i tried it once and they would not go auto or mannualy. If you say download fire fox it takes the info from the IE NOT AVANT AND AVANT IS MY DEFAULT BROWSER. What I dont understand is what the point of wasting time registering on this forum just to bash Avant? And Im mainly talking to phillip........

I mean seriously.. Its like the Vista bashers.. You go everywhere you can find just to find people who has a good experience and bash them and Vista..

Then I also don't know why people INSIST on keeping the ancient, antiquated IE6. Which version of IE you have installed (AT LEAST in my opinion) DOES make a difference in how fast a page loads.. But go ahead blame Avant for all of it.

What ? Okay now I see why the browser is what it is. Once you are a global moderator and have the hability (because I GOTTA consider this hability) to post SO MANY CRAP in a single post, I just couldn't expect anything better from the browser. First, I am not "bashing" anything. If you think that this crap is great and does not need any improvement, GREAT, we can't all have a brain. I came here because a browser that WAS good and decent once became awful, and I don't really care if you are going to agree or not, as you can see, I'm not alone in this matter, there are other people with similar issues. And I repeat: if ANYBODY, with a fresh windows install or something, run a test with all the main browsers available (i.e. firefox 2 and 3, opera, safari), it will be as clear as crystal that avant became the slowest amongst all of them. And the difference IS NOT minimal.
And you, stam-whatsoever, I currently have IE6 installed, but I've already had IE7 and guess what ? It was still as fast as a lazy turtle.

When a user comes here to discuss serious issues about a software and the people responsible for this very same software react saying "there is no point in creating an account here to bash the wonderful and flawless software", you can get a good idea of where this software is heading to. Anyway, whatever, i give up. All I'm worrying about now is to use either opera or firefox. Because if this is the software that you people consider "flawless", well, I hope you enjoy it. For me, unfortunately it became the worst browser amongst the many options available out there.

AXEMAN, Please look here for an instruction of how to export bookmarks from AB and here for an instruction of how to import them into IE.
phillip_, I'm not completely sure whether I've already asked you this, But do you have any IE addons enabled in Avant? (Please look at Tools>Avant Browser Options...>Add-ons.)

No I don't. Now that you mentioned, I didn't even know it could be done. I thought it was some kind of very unstable feature or so.

This thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere so I've locked it. We get it. Avant is crap. Move along.

Just to be clear, the admins/mods do not make the browser. We're just users who volunteer to run the forum...

And nobody said Avant was "flawless."
