Post by kazme » Mon Apr 28, 2008 3:13 pm

I've got a bit better results with IE8 with the 2nd test:
28282.2ms
And webwait:
8.16s
EDIT
Just tried the first test:
1235
But still, Firefox is much faster.:-(

A little update:
After a small IE optimization, I could receive 17819.4ms in Webkit's testing...
But still, Far from Firefox 3 beta 5.

I tested it once with IE7 and FireFox 2.0.0.14,
IE7:
14452.2ms +/- 0.9%

FF2:
37097.0ms +/- 7.3%

I went over to Avant for a minute, then went back to FF and it didn't wanted to respond for a while.

Avant can't be much faster/slower than IE, or other IE based browsers, whatever it claims. With that said, the rendering speed difference is noticeable only in test pages. In real world, the browsing speed is mostly determined by connection speed, which is more or less the same for any browser, though the more aggressive use of cache in opera and maxthon2 may help in some cases.

Not necessarily. The rendering engine could be more efficient at rendering (X)HTML and CSS but the difference wouldn't really be that much unless you have some 10,000 odd elements. However, the Javascript engines from the different browsers are much more efficient in Safari/Webkit, Opera/Presto, and Firefox/Gecko, than IE/Trident. IE 8 has made steps to a more efficient Javascript engine but it's still lagging behind.

I wonder if it would be possible to render HTML/CSS with one browser, and JS with another. :-k
then again, using two engines might be overall less efficient.

Taken partially from one of my earlier messages:

There is a budding movement, you might call it, to have Anderson and the SlimBrowser people meet, with the base idea being combining Avant and SlimBrowser positives, and coming up with a new browsing or a single browsing product.

Could be interesting, yet there just seem to be too many negatives that would outweigh the positives.

Even with Anderson working also on Orca Browser, perhaps taking Avant into the Orca and Mozilla-based engine? Then again, maybe that already IS what Orca is.

Pray tell, where can we find some more mention of this movement?

Currently, seems to be 100 to maybe 150 various users of either both or either browsers... more on the Internet via Google or Copernic Agent searches. Hard to gauge exactly, of course, but there's more waves being made regarding combining the best points of both...

Just seems interesting to some, I guess.

So far, I find good points for both browsers, but personally appreciate Avant's layout and a bit more of the "adjust-ability" found in Avant.

Then again, as mentioned earlier, if Orca may be or become Avant using the Gecko (sp ?) engine...that might become even better or faster than Avant based on the Triton engine.

I'd be interested in hearing what people are saying about this, too, but I'm not finding anything via Google. You specifically stated that there was a movement, can you give us some specific links? I used to use SlimBrowser before using Avant.

Movement = My term for it.

Let me get back to office this week-end, and I will post some of the URL's or pages the search results happened to turn up. Certainly not a cast of thousands of users, but the searches turned up a few.

We do most of our search work using Copernic Agent, but Google should be able to help drill down to a few of these "movement" people, especially where they mentioned Avant and SlimBrowser ideas and comments.
