Avant Exodus

Post by ABman » Mon Oct 15, 2007 1:38 pm

I am now becoming very frustrated with the total lack of feedback from Anderson in regard to the many questions that have recently arisen from the release of new versions and I think there will be an increasing exodus of Avant users because of this.
The nearest browser to Avant I have used is SlimBrowser. This has the Groups item where Avant's used to be and has the "system" buttons (black ones) where Avant's used to be. It still isn't as configurable as Avant which is one reason why I stick mostly with Avant but it generally looks and feels like Avant.
The lack of feedback about the above two items is why I am becoming frustrated. I'm sure there are others who feel the same about other items in Avant.
Please please please Anderson give us some sort of response as to why all ours questions and requests for change/information appears to be falling on deaf ears. I fear that there is a reason for the lack of response as I've mentioned in other threads. Give us the truth please, we can take it (I think ;-) !! ).

I'm not exactly saying that users leaving this browser behind is a good thing but it's not all that bad either. Anderson doesn't get paid for the software so he isn't losing money for every person that leaves.

Of course he doesn't get paid... but I'm the same opinion as ABman... I think, that AvantBrowser has lost a lot of magic with v11.0 and v11.5.

More features (yes, sure... that's nice, but...), tons of bugs (or workarounds) and a slower (but nicer) interface...

I have to confess, that I also downloaded SlimBrowser yesterday to see the difference, because I'm not happy with AB anymore... or I'm going to revert to AB v10.2.52, but I don't think, that this is a real option (I don't have even tried it under Windows Vista x64 and with the stopped developement of that version... for how long can you use it?).

I first came to AvantBrowser in 2003, but have used it as default browser in 2004 (yes, I even know the real date, because I keep other news sites informed about it as well: 29.03.2004), because of the stopped developement of Crazybrowser and it was such a *wow* effect... even more, that Windows Vista . Now I don't know how long I'm going to stay if things don't improve...

i guess i was laboring under false impressions, i thought he would have been paid something for having avant find, powered by yahoo search being the default home page for avant browser.

He might make enough from ads to pay the hosting costs for the two websites.. But I doubt anymore than that.

shouldn't matter... the browser's free, that's what counts. I think there's actually a bit of money made for one developer, but I'm probably wrong... Anderson actually has a couple servers afaik, which are used for online storage as well. I'm not sure if there's much of a profit, but surely enough to pay for a couple servers.

I am not bothered whether he gets paid for anything or not, I would still like my original concerns addressed; though I doubt they will.

I've used Avant for a few weeks with only minor issues that the people on this forum have addressed to my satisfaction. I'm very happy with Avant.

But I don't find it acceptable for support staff to tell people the browser is free. If you were volunteering with autistic kids would you use that line on the parents? Yes, I know it's not the same thing, but in a fundamental way it is.

Why? It IS free indeed and the support staff has no connection whatsoever to the developer, in terms of knowing the code/collaborating in writing it nor in terms of having any particular weight in his decision-making, so I'm afraid there are not many possible answers apart from that...

Indeed... AvantBrowser is a free browser. Sure that, if you like it... and use it for a longer time, you should also donate to "reward" the creator... which you should do for every free software you like...

To summarize my previous statement: Don't get me wrong... Sure, that AvantBrowser is a great browser... I know it, because I've used it for more than 4 years as default browser... BUT imo the version 10 of AvantBrowser was a better, less buggy version of AB than the version 11.

I also want to underline, that I was shocked when I used the AvantBrowser 11 for the first time (=first public release).

But the parents of children requiring special attention have less of a choice than computer users that wish to browse websites. So no, it is completely different, you don't need Avant Browser, but many parents do need assistance to care for and support a child with special needs.

But the "you didn't pay for it, so why are you complaining" responses are usually addressed to those who barge into this forum, demanding with their 1st post that things get fixed or changed. If the software is free, how much do you think the staff at this forum are getting paid? Nothing that's how much, and none of us should have to take that attitude from anyone. Or give it, for that matter.

I'm not part of the support staff, and so far I'm the only one I've seen telling people not to complain because it's free.

Other browsers are free too. Sadly avant has gone downhill and it seems like the faster and bigger your machine is the worse Avant is, not to mention its become absolutely horrible at having lots of tabs open. Takes literally several minutes to start up and only lasts for a while before it starts becoming unstable (videos/pictures won't load, scripts fail, out of memory at line: XX errors, etc. etc.) and don't tell me I need a bigger machine, I have a QX9650 processor and 8 Gb of 4-3-3-10 RAM, a blazingly fast machine otherwise.

Sadly, I am now using Avant only for simple browsing (news etc.). For all other purposes I have, reluctantly, switched to FireFox.

I do wish Avant will go back to its heydays.

Wasn't really clear if you were addressing that post, my post or a previous post than that. But ok.
