Bye Bye Avant

Post by reubensr » Sun Oct 14, 2007 2:23 am

I have been a faithful Avant user for several years, but I think no more. I have just installed SlimBrowser. Unless I am missing something, it does everything Avant does, and more. Especially the fully customizable toolbars, with the system buttons where I want them.

So for now, it's Bye, Bye Avant. It's been nice knowing you. Maybe I'll be back some day :(

I sometimes use SlimBrowser but prefer Avant. SlimBrowser doesn't have the mouse gestures that I use in Avant and you can't get rid of the menu items you never use like you can in Avant.

Does SlimBrowser have features like online-storage & autofill?

No and AVANT's is more complete than MAXTHON's which only saves bookmarks which also has a limit of only 300K. Wonder what AVANT's reserve limit is?

SLIMBROWSER have also had big spam problems at their forum.

It does have AutoFill which it calls AutoLogin but I use RoboForm anyway.

SlimBroswer is attractive, indeed, but it sadly does not do "all that Avant does" in every nook and cranny... but one major example is that it does offer what appears to be multi-threaded operation, etc.

From what we and many others here in the Enclave have seen over a years time with both browsers, both could stand to learn a bit from each other -- examples being that ieSpell is better "integrated" into Avant than in the current SlimBrowser, and SlimBrowser's implementation of auto-fill / form fill seems "differently weird" compared to perceived easier way that Avant does it, etc.

Since we do a lot of all manner of work and web sites, podcasting / videocasting, support, etc., just to note, we do run Avant, SlimBrowser and Firefox, all installed, and it is interesting to see each one (or two or three!) in operation, in order to compare and contrast.

Alittle off topic.. But, as been said occasionally in discussion here. Those of us that develop/design websites are more or less forced to have many different browsers and in some cases more than one version of the same browser to beable to see how our incarnation will look to the end-user. Its sometimes a hard task to make your design look the same in all browsers. As is not the problem with browsers such as Avant, Slimbrowser, TheWorld Browser, Maxthon just to name a few because they all use the same engine or are based off of IE. So if you test for a particular version of IE you can guarantee that it will work in those browsers as well.

Yes. I found slim browser much enjoyable because of pop-up blocker.

I know slim browser lacks "customize menu and mouse gestures", but I can live without. :)

The hard part is pop-ups. I was using avant for number of years. But not any more.

I will use if Avant Browser develop stronger popup blocker. [-X

Thank you,

Eastangel

Funny that; I've been using Avant for years and have had no problem whatsoever with popups. I wonder if it's the websites visited that make the difference! :-k

Doesn't matter. Pop-up blocker should supress when other browsers does this. Browsers are to be used as per user wish which sites one should visit, but not developer.

Personally and as a "group" person too, have found that Avant pop-up "problems" are very few and in-between...Avant has always seemed to be the better of the breed as far as "intelligent anti-pop-up activity and performance" has been concerned, generally working as expected.

Perhaps some users mileage / kilometer-age (new word) will vary in this aspect, or how this option is being used, or the expectations.

i agreed josephrot. i believe sara said, the popup blocker was one of the things, that drew her to avant browser. ditto here. i don't have to click on any thing to see blocked url, however brief. and wow, the popup blocker audio. popup blocker works great here.

Not so much the pop-up blocker for me, since IE also had it. But I did like the AD Blocker, and the tabbed browsing feature (before IE7).

i have'nt tried adblocker. think i will test it. i used to go to pcmech.com to check avant's popup blocker. a useful site, but used to have a lot of popups. this was in the past. my perception is that ie7 popup blocker is much improved over ie6's. google toolbar used to catch most of the popups in ie6. but not in ie7.

for me, Avant Browser just feels right. I couldn't say why I use Avant Browser, because there's no real reason other than the fact that it's using the IE render engine, or more like it's not using FireFox's render engine.
there is no best browser, but I must say I've been messing around with some newer versions of Opera for website testing, and imho, Opera is a bit better. but I would never be able to use Opera over Avant Browser, because it just doesn't feel right with it. not sure how to explain it, but Avant Browser is just me. I don't think it's a matter of just getting used to it, because when I first started using Avant Browser, all I had to do was find where everything was at, and it felt like I was already used to it.
