Why do I see "Your PC has Windows 8 but the info on this page is about Windows 8.1. Update now" message but I am on Win

Post by Arandora » Wed May 20, 2015 9:22 am

Why do I see "Your PC has Windows 8 but the info on this page is about Windows 8.1. Update now" message when I am using Win 8.1 but it only appears when I am using AB and not on IE 11 or Chrome? e.g. on http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/inte ... s#ie=ie-11
Similarly my existing problem in this topic http://forum.avantbrowser.com/viewtopic ... 37#p198237 only occurs on AB and not on IE 11?

Does it matter which IE engine setting you use?

No. Same message "Your PC has Windows 8 but the info on this page is about Windows 8.1. Update to Windows 8.1 for free (this last bit is a clickable link).

It's likely AB is still using an older UA

So I just have to put up with both issues when using AB?

Not necessarily, no. You should be able to change the UA string (though AB may end up re-setting it itself (done that to me a few times)).

The following is the registry key you'll need to change;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Reason: Corrected UA string location

The avant you use is lite version or ultimate? I use the same system but don't see the message on that page.

I'm using Ultimate with this build but previously always used Lite. Switch back to Lite?
What do I need to change the registry key to?

Visit this site: http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx and see if gives any lines in yellow and follow the steps.

Also, can you post your UA strings (Avant & IE stand alone)) here? So we can compare them.

And when you visit that site with IE?

windows NT 6.2 stands for windows 8

I guess you will see 6.3 when you visit it with IE. 6.3 stands for windows 8.1

I'm not sure if you have to put it there, maybe Xiaobing or MysteryFcm can answer that.

Whats the value now of Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent ?

I think you only have to make a new string under User Agent called "Platform" with value "Windows NT 6.3"
You could try this and if it doesn't work, just delete it again.

Maybe you can make a back up first to be sure.

I found it here: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/799/

You've added it in the wrong location.

Correct location and string spec:

Image

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

This depends on what you are using (e.g. IE11), and how you want your browser identified.

e.g.;

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 11.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/6.0)
