Power out leading to weird Avant

Post by mathman » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:09 pm

I just had a short power outage. After restoring power Avant appears with at least three problems.
1) IE9 is my default rendering. It got changed to Chrome. I changed it back.
2) Skin got changed, so that I lost toolbar. I managed to restore it.
3) MOST SERIOUS. The x in the lower right corner of the screen which lets me have a sidebar of bookmarks is gone!

Tools > Backup / Restore Profiles > Choose the most recent backup prior to the outage and then Restore.

There were no backups.

I also discovered that my rendering engines under Avant browser options were gone.

I want to emphasize that item 3 (getting bookmarks displayed) is the most critical item. I have a vague recollection that it came up before, but I don't remember the solution.

It hit me - I just had to look at my previous forum submissions to find it (view - check status bar).

Reinstalling should fix everything you mentioned, but if your profile was damaged when the power went off, you might lose your bookmarks, bookmark icons, or some configuration settings. If you use online storage, you should be able to get everything, or almost everything, back after you reinstall.

Fortunately, Bookmarks and Autofil lists were both intact. The other problems were fairly easy to fix.

This is why I stress to everyone to buy a UPS (or other brand) of battery backup for your computer. When my power goes out, my computer just keeps on going, for up to 14 minutes, giving me plenty of time to save and shut down the computer. Now I have an automatic emergency generator that powers up the whole house after 18 seconds (16KW), so my battery backup only has to do it's job for that long.... But for people that don't have this, a UPS is great for saving your computer work. Not only that, but UPS backups have a warranty that guarantees your computer's health from lightening strikes or power surges for up to $150,000, for life. That's a pretty sweet insurance policy....
