Some websites appear narrow

Post by Victor Delta » Wed Apr 03, 2013 3:40 pm

Just started using Avant 2013 b22 on a Windows 8 pc.

Am I the only person who finds that some websites appear to have larger text than normal and so the layout is not as it should be on Avant. A good example is the BBC News website http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/. I've noticed that some WordPress websites also do the same. Never had this problem with earlier versions of Avant.

On the same pc, the websites render normally, and correctly, in both IE10 and Firefox.

Is it an elusive Avant setting I need to tweek or a bug? By the way, appears the same in both IE Compatible and IE10 Standards modes.

V

PS This forum page appears fine except that the word 'normal' in the drop down box above is larger than normal!

I'm not sure if any of these suggetions will solve your problem, but they're worth a try:

* Check the View > Zoom menu to see if Set Current Zoom as the Default Zoom is checked. There used to be a Text Size setting, but it's been gone for a while now.

* If you're using the Firefox engine, go to Tools > Firefox > Options and set the font size on the Content tab.

* If you're using the Chrome engine, go to Tools > Chrome > Options. When the Chrome Settings page loads, click Show advanced settings near the bottom. You can set the font size in the Web content section.

* If you're using the IE engine, you might try Tools > Internet Explorer > Internet Options... > General tab > Accessibility button > Ignore font sizes specified on webpages.

Many thanks. Yes, I'm using the IE engine. Default zoom is checked (100%) and clicking the ignore font sizes box makes things even worse - totally unusable in fact.

Any other thoughts...?

The bbc site looks ok here. Can you post a screenshot of what you see?

What are the complete version numbers that you're using of IE10 and the IE 10 engine in Avant?

IE10 - 10.0.9200.16519 and Avant shows exactly the same. Just installed b23 but the problem persists.

Right click the page in Avant and hover over Encoding in the menu. Then, find out if the same encoding is in use in IE 10. If they're different, set the encoding in Avant to match the encoding in IE 10, and see if that makes any difference.

I've got a hunch that xiaobing is going to have to get involved to help you further, and she'll probably have to discuss it with Anderson.

As far as I know, other than the zoom setting, Avant doesn't directly affect how the content on a page is rendered, and I'd think that since Avant is using the same Trident (IE) engine that's already on your computer, IE and Avant using the IE engine should render pages the same way.

The only other thing I can think of is a plug-in of some sort that is running in IE but not in Avant, or vice versa, or a different version of a plug-in from IE to Avant.

Thanks. I'll await further advice from xiaobing. For additional info, this is what an Avant search (using Google) looks like - as you can see it only occupies about a third of the laptop screen!

As far as Google is concerned, you might find some help for the problem until it gets fixed by installing the Schmoogle user script (really, that's what it's called) that's available at http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/159750. There's also a good writeup about Schmoogle at http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/04/google ... usability/. I've been using it for a month or so now, and I like it a lot. It may or may not be able to make use of the wasted space you're seeing, but then again, since it allows you to choose whether to display results in 1, 2, 3, or 4 columns, it just might.

About the BBC News website,I didn't see any difference here either:
avant &IE10.jpg
Do you use any plugins in Avant IE engine?

I think this is what Victor Delta is referring to:
bbc1.png
bbc2.png
There might be other places where the difference in font sizes shows up, but this is what I found to be the most noticeable difference between his two screenshots.

If you look at my two screenshots carefully you'll see that virtually everywhere the Avant text is larger than the IE10 version and is often too large to fit in the space available - sometimes even resulting in hidden words (eg see the text under the two small pictures top right).

On the top story, the single line headline needs a second line in Avant.

Stumbled across the solution to this problem by accident when I was using another monitor. It turns out to be a Windows 8 setting issue - Personalise, Display, Change the size of all items.

It transpires that the default setting is medium (125%) and changing the setting to smaller (100%) has fixed the problem I had. It seems to affect some websites (and programmes) and not others which is why I thought it was an Avant issue.
