Notifying the forum of software updates

Post by hornakapopolis » Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:41 pm

If you want to notify the forum that another piece of software has been updated, please keep it in one thread. Some items are averaging a new post about every 10-14 days and all it's doing is making the forum larger and harder to search.

Another advantage of this is that those who want to be notified via this forum (as it is helpful) can start watching that topic and know when an item is added.

All posts not following this will be locked or deleted. -TomServo

Thanks!

(from another thread)

With all of the software out there we'd end up with 2 pages of stickies.

Personally, (and this is my opinion only and I realize it means nothing) this is a bit silly. I could see where it might be helpful to a teeny-tiny portion of people on here, but when you consider...

1. Most software has it's own website. It seems like someone who's interested in keeping up-to-date with a program they like will go to the site themselves. And using this thread as an example, that would seem to be easier, too. There's no information provided in this thread... no dates... no changes... all it has is a link to their site. So, this actually adds steps for someone to update their software when compared to going to the site themselves.

2. Many programs, including RoboForm has a function that notifies the user when it has been updated. Mine notified me last night as I hadn't had my computer on at home for a couple of days.

3. I don't know the goal of the website, but I'd assume that it was to support Avant, not to draw traffic from other sites to notify people of their software and then point them back to the site we drew them from in the first place. I'm guessing that we're not hurting for bandwidth, but wanting people to come here for these updates does seem to be unnecessary use of it.

And as for the sticky idea, every thread has a Watch this topic for replies link at the bottom. A new update posted in the same thread would alert anyone who wanted to know. Also, this forum is currently only 8 pages. That is a tad bit to browse through, but not really. Also, go through it and look at all of the RoboForm, Adaware, System Mechanic, etc. I'd be shocked if we couldn't clean it up a bit and knock it down to at least 6 and possible even 5. When I went through the Requests forum, we went from 79 pages to 37.

People find things by making it easy. Generally, the smaller it is, the easier.

WOO HOO

FINALLY - DC - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This has been needing to be said for a VERY long time now!!! And, as you put it so extremely professionally and well done (honestly as always) - There are much better and more PROPER ways of finding out about "Software Updates/Reviews" in this Thread...

Heck, there are TWO at the TOP which are ALREADY "Stickies" about Software Reviews and Suggested Software!!! And, as you said - all anyone must do, is to make theirself be 'alerted to THAT topic to be notified if and when it is ever updated'!!! Gee - real hard, huh??? Good Grief Charlie Brown

Anyway - I saw this post and just 'had' to stick my two cents worth in - and am 'quite sure' that the person whom typically takes up the entire page (or most of it) - will have their two cents as well - but, as always, it matters not to me!!!

YOU said what needed to be said "because it is ACCURATE" and THAT is the only thing which DOES matter!!!

THANKS DC,
"Judy"

I think the goal was to only delete items that are duplicates and/or have no relative value in the forum. I did move those to Old Topics, though, and locked them. Search results can be configured (and are by default) to come up with the newest first, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

But, as you're now seeing... that is why we sometimes get perturbed that people start new and unnecessary topics. ;)

[IMO]

This forum is really just 'ad space' for other software courtesy of Avant Forum.

None of the 'reviews' actually tell any personal opinions, they're all just the release notes from the web sites.

They might as well have just posted a link to the site they're promoting.

Do you really think so?

I feel like I was just making a note of the 'copy catting' of Total Commander and the free use of this forum for their gain.

Personally, I didn't think the thread needed a [FLAME WARNING] in the title as there was no foul language or name calling going on, but it doesn't matter that much to me.

I guess, it's because of the spammers trying to 'invade' and 'take over' the phpBB forums with their automated programs. They have figured out how to bypass the capcha files and so I've been on a 'mission' lately keeping them cleaned off.

WebGuy actually this section was suppose to be for the recommending of Proggies that you had personal knowledge of, either through your own or a friend's use of, and that you thought people here might want to look into for their own use.
Some how it was changed over the years.
