You don't need software to do this. What you want is an expanded HOSTS file, which blocks traffic of certain web hosts from reaching your local machine. They can be advertising or any other malicious web hosts. When you encounter a site that has advertising from one of the web hosts, either the advertising does not appear (separate ad server) or the entire website is inaccessible (404 error).

The HOSTS file is located at " C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc " and has no file extension. Just tell Windows to Open with Notepad.

I keep a large HOSTS on my webserver, for public distribution. Currently just under 1 MB, it contains nearly 30,000 Advertising servers, and you can get it Here :)

I tried using that but I couldn't browse anything after putting that in my HOSTS file. Yes, I did it right. I'm not computer illiterate.

There was a known problem with very large hosts files in Windows 2000, and so possibly XP too. There's a a solution involving turning off a service you're probably not using, but I'm afraid I don't recall which one. DNS server maybe. You'll find it easily enough with the right terms I'm sure.

Myself though, I used this until Avant 9 come out. I find the ad blocker does the job well.

Adsubtract ($29.95)

Ad Muncher ($25.00)

Two very good ad and popup blockers.

I've been using AdSubtract for about 3 years. Once you get the hang of how it blocks and allows, it's really a pretty good piece of software. It's been on every system I've built in the past 3 years. I wouldn't surf without it.
