Free AVG Antivirus

Post by Noyb » Sat Sep 29, 2007 10:20 pm

AVG Free Edition is a freeware version of AVG Antivirus. It's a great antivirus program (it's saved my computer a few times). It comes complete with an email scanner, a Virus Vault (where found viruses are stored until you delete them), a Task Scheduler, which automatically scans your computer and updates your software once a day, and a few other great features. I highly recommend this program for anyone who needs an antivirus program, or is just tired of being nagged by Norton, McAfee, etc. to renew their subscription. It can be found here: free.grisoft.com. Like I mentioned earlier, there is also a full version of this software with more features, if you're willing to pay. That can be found here: grisoft.com.

Trend Micro isn't free... "for free" is the key there.

I've been a loyal trend micro user for many years.
Then, I've decided to try XP SP3 and Trend Micro was the only program that refused to work with it.
I've tried to uninstall/reinstall it to no avail.
So I've contacted the Trend Micro's support just to find out that their newest anti virus (Trend Micro Pc-Cillin Internet Security 2008) is not yet compatible with XP SP3 and Vista SP1.
They've said that it'll be compatible in the few months and provided me 2 "solutions":
1.Install an OLDER version of Trend Micro (Don't know why, But Trend Micro Pc-Cillin Internet Security 2007 works fine on XP SP3 and Vista SP1)
The 2nd solution would be even simplier: Just uninstall XP SP3.
So I've decided to uninstall the SP3. I've uninstalled it and it kinda ran, But still very unstable. Always crashed and slowed down my computer.
So I've uninstalled trend micro and installed the AVG Free for a while, Which worked great with XP SP3.
Then, I've uninstalled Windows XP & installed Vista Ultimate and entered the Microsoft website to find out that there's a free 90-days trial version of Windows Live OneCare.
I'm using it now and it seems to work great.
If it'll continue to work as expected then I'll probably buy it.

Secondary PC same as primary but with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate as the OS.

It's not you, Sara. Keep the free.grisoft.com link in mind because it's really hard to find from their home page now. I haven't even bothered looking for it after the last time I tried. I thought that maybe they ahd dropped the free version, too.

Yeah, they try to hide the free version as much as possible. Like hornakapopolis said, just save the free.grisoft.com link, and go there, where you can find their line of free security products.

The only prob being that you do not get any support where as with avast's free Home edition you do & it is live real time protection also.

You are oh so right Angeldust. In fact when you are doing a scan with a antispyware utility, Avast is watching. I was doing a on demand scan with SuperantiSpyWare one time; it hit a file, that Avast considered suspect, and Avast sounded off. I guess you could call this the big brother effect. The file was killwind.exe, which HP uses.

I see AVG is number one antivirus in these days. I use Avira Antivirus and is running pretty well.I don't like AVG because have more menus and options;i like simple and efficient solutions.

NOD32 has always been my choice for an AV, with Kaspersky a close second ....
