Ditch Acrobat, Fox it instead

Post by bigC » Tue Jul 26, 2005 11:11 pm

Foxit PDF Reader

Small, Fast, Clean, and FREE PDF reader for everyday use.

Finally, I have found it! A replacement for the bloated, slow, messy Acrobat Reader. Why Adobe needs 20 megs to do what requires less then 1MB, I have no clue.

If you don't like Acrobat, you should definitely check out Foxit,

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

It works great in Avant and it contains no spy ware, ad ware or other nasty things.

What does it look like if you try to zoom the text. When I tried to do that, it was really screwed up........can't explain what it looked like except that it looked kinda like the Avant title page superimposed over parts of the text I was trying to zoom.

So I haven't been using it.............I'm using Acrobat 7

I don't know Pip, it doesn't do that here. Maybe its just that particular document, did you try a diff. file?

Maybe they can help here,

Edit: Looks like you're not the only one, I just found this,
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=54

Maybe you should try updating your graphics driver. I think they mention that...

Macs have the lightweight Preview.app to open PDF files, among many other files.

I gave up on it.........searched for later drivers for my graphics card and had the latest (I guess). Since I don't use pdf all that much, it just wasn't worth the effort. I have Adobe Reader 7.0 and it opens pretty quickly.

I like it. I always thought that Reader was way too big for me. I have been looking for a good small pdf reader for a long time.

Acrobat Reader is is ridiculously big, but I find that since 7 it's been pretty fast.

I'm glad this post came up while I was restoring my system. I haven't even bothered to put Reader back on.

I have been using Foxit for awhile now, I will not go back to Adobe and it's bloatware what so ever. Foxit is a great and small program, I have been mentioning it in other forums.

I thought I'd posted this, but I had to go back to Adobe--when I printed out mailing labels Foxit left off the bar codes.

how do I get Foxit to open up instead of acrobat?

Post by browserod » Thu Sep 01, 2005 1:43 pm

I use GSview in Firefox to open up pdf's but thought I'd try Foxit but I can't figure out how to make Foxit the default pdf reader in Avant.
